インタビュー全文と和訳
Kevin Burkhardt: Lars Nootbaar is going to come on in and join us. Take a seat. Ah, I tried to clam down after all that emotion. Uh, wow, we’re just reliving it just like you lived it. I mean, what just happened Lars?
”ケビン : ラーズ・ヌートバー選手がこちらにきてくれます。どうぞ座ってください。私はあの感動のあとで、落ち着こうとしています。君たちがしたことを、ただ思い返しています。何が起こったのでしょうか？”
Lars Nootbaar: I don’t even know. I really don’t even know. I’m still trying to figure it out. I don’t know if you guys figured it out. I was saying earlier, I didn’t want to get like a flag or a penalty for too many men on the field after right there at the end of the game when the rely was coming in, so crazy game, man, crazy emotions. Oh, it’s good to be on top though.
”ヌートバー : 僕にもわかりません。本当に全くわかりません。まだ、理解しようとしているところです。あなたたちは理解しているかもしれませんが。さっき言ったように、ペナルティーになりたくなかったんです。試合の最後、走者たちが戻ってきたとき、チームメイト達がフィールドにたくさん入りすぎてたから。クレイジーな試合だったし、クレイジーな気持ちです。でも勝ってうれしいです。”
Kevin: That’s for sure.
”ケビン : そうでしょうね。”
Alex Rodriguez: Walk me through what’s happening in the dugout? You’re down 3-0. Your team has all the heart, all the fundamentals, but still 3-0. What are you guys thinking before that home run?
”A-ロッド : ベンチで何が起こっていたか教えてくれませんか。君たちは、3-0 で負けていた。熱い心も、技術も、みんな持っている。でも試合は3-0。あのホームランの前、君たちはどんなことを考えていたのですか？”
Nootbaar: I mean, obviously, you know, we got, you know, Yoshida’s came up’s so big for us this whole tournament. And we were getting guys on all game long. We just wanted cashing it in. So I think as a group we kind of had confidence that we were going to scratch them across. It’s just a matter of when we were taking good at that heritage right here. Unbelievable, but, you know, that’s kind of the group mentality, you know, just never give up. We’re playing for our country the WBC. It’s unbelievable.

David Ortiz: This is the first time you play with a group of guys like this. I’ve been watching the whole game. I see the chemistry in the dugout. What made that ball close so good?
”Big Papi : 君が、こんなふうに日本チームでプレーするのは初めてですよね。私は全部の試合を見てきました。ベンチの雰囲気も見ています。あのいい雰囲気はどこから来ているのでしょうか？“
Nootbaar: I think, I mean, a lot of credit goes to the guys that were there since February. You know, they’ve been, they’ve been working out as a team since February. And so, you know, they know it’s at stake and we got Japan across our chest and they wear that with pride. Everybody does in the dugout. And so, you know, we’d be foolish if we ever gave up during that game. You know, it just goes to show. These guys are unbelievable, and I’m just glad they accepted me.

Kevin: Lars, I thought it was so cool. Uh, you know, we’ve seen the greatness of Shohei. He’s amazing, but I don’t think we’ve ever seen the emotion that he showed tonight. Especially, in the ninth inning he rips that double and he is flexing like Hulk Hogan out there. I thought that was so cool. What was the, what, you know, what did the dugout feel when he did that?
”ケビン : ラーズ、ほんとにすごかったです。僕たちはずっと翔平の偉大さを見てきました。彼は素晴らしい。でも、彼が今夜見せたような感情表現は、これまで見たことがなかったと思います。特に、9回に2塁打を打って、そのとき彼はまるでハルク・ホーガンみたいに喜びを表現していました(＊1, ＊2)。僕はあれをすごいクールだと思いましたが、彼があんなふうにした時、ベンチはどんな様子だったんですか？”
Nootbaar: Yeah, I was saying it earlier, anytime you see, Shohei showed emotion like that, you know, it’s real, and so, that gets everybody fired up when a quiet guy like that with a cool demeanor gets fired up. It lights a fire on everybody. And so, he said earlier he made up his mind that he was gonna get on base and I was like “Man, I wish I could just make up my mind and get on base in that situation too”, but you know, that just goes to the show, the greatness of Shohei.
”ヌートバー : さっきも言ったように、翔平があんなふうに感情をあらわにするのは珍しいし、それだけ本気だったと思います。あれがみんなに火をつけました。だって、普段あんなクールな振る舞いをする物静かな男が、燃えてるんだから(＊3)。みんなに火をつけたんです。彼は、あの打席の前に、塁に出るって決めたって言っていて、僕は、”おい、僕だって、あの状況で、心に決めたら塁に出られたってなったらいいのに”って思いましたけどね。とにかく、あれはただ、翔平のすごさを示していました。”
A-Rod: Well, Kevin, Ohtani was, uh, Hulk Hogan, I think my man here was Rick Flair, but it was exciting. What are you guys talking? I mean, obviously, you’re talking in Japanese what are the boys talking as you’re down. Is there a lot of like “Hey, boys! Let’s go”? Spirits are high?
”A-ロッド : えっと、ケビンが大谷をハルク・ホーガンだったって言うなら、僕は、ここにいる君はリック・フレアーだったと思うよ(＊2)。とにかくエキサイティングでした。君たちは、何を話しているんですか？つまり、明らかに日本語で話していると思うのですが、君たちが負けている時、何を話すのですか？”みんな行こうぜ”みたいな発言は多いですか？士気は高い？”
Nootbaar: Absolutely. And they’re saying “Saa iko”, “let’s go”, you know, and I’m saying “let’s go”. too. And, you know, the spirits are always up in that dugout.
”ヌートバー : もちろん。彼らは、”さあ行こう”って言ってます。”let’s go”って意味なんですが。だから、僕も”let’s go”って言ってました。それに、ベンチでは、いつも士気は高いです。”
A-Rod: You say “Saa iko”?
”A-ロッド : ”さあ行こう”って言いましたか？”
Nootbaar: “Saa iko”, “let’s go”, you know. So, that’s kind of the word that I picked up over the past two weeks, you know. Don’t want the words that I picked up over the past two weeks, but that’s just, you know, the team said it so often and they’re just… I don’t want to keep repeating myself, but there’s just that fire in that mentality with this thing. That’s special.
”ヌートバー : はい、”さあ行こう”です。“let’s go”っていう意味で。それは、ここ2週間の間で僕が覚えた言葉です。この2週間で覚えた言葉を言いたいわけじゃないんだけど、チームが本当によく言っていたので。同じことばかり繰り返して言いたくないけれど、この言葉とあのメンタリティーで、あの熱さがありました。スペシャルでした。”
Big Papi: Let me tell you Murakami, the guy he didn’t show up early in the game today, well, he showed up late in the game. And the guy, that past couple of years in Japan, he had showed some monster numbers. What type of player he really is?
”ビッグ・パピ : 村上のことを話させてください。彼は今日の試合、調子が良くなかったけど、試合の最後には見せてくれた。彼は、日本で、ここ数年、非常に素晴らしい成績を残してきていますよね。彼はどんなタイプの選手でしょうか？”
Nootbaar: He is a special player, you know, and like you said, he broke Sadaharu Oh’s record of 55 home runs last year and so having a guy like that to play he’s got so much ability that, you know, as a team, we got so much confidence in him, and so, for him to come in like that big, you know, like you said after not coming in, you know, the way he wanted to perform earlier in the game. That just shows that mentality that he has in the players. The young player like that to be able to come through like that is huge.

Kevin: Yeah, Lars, Sasaki, I know the game was decided late, but that this was really I think the first time that a lot of folks especially here in this country got to see him, right?
”ケビン : そうですね、ラーズ。それで、佐々木についてですが。今日の試合は確かに後半に決まりましたが、(前半の)佐々木の、あのたくさんのフォークボールを、特にアメリカの人は初めて見たと思います。”
Nootbaar: Yeah.
”ヌートバー : そうですね。”
Kevin: That was a, he’s probably the greatest pitcher that you’ve never seen. Maybe the greatest pitch that’s not in the Majors yet. What did you see, what have you seen in his two starts? I mean, that watching that tonight was unbelievable.
”ケビン : 彼はおそらく、君が見たことのある中で一番すごいピッチャーなんじゃないかと。メジャーリーグにはまだいない、すごいピッチャーかもしれません。彼の初回・2回のピッチング、君はどのように見てますか？今夜の投球はアンビリーバブルでした。”
Nootbaar: He’s special and he’s kind of got that mentality too. He’s got that dug mentality about him, too, where that’s what I respect the most about him. He’s got crazy ability, but, you know what I mean, he wants it bad and he can’t wait to come and show, you know, show the states what he’s got. Obviously, today, he was kind of showing it today, so, um first game I saw, he hit 103 so, you know, that sold me right away. I was like all right that’s all I need to see.

A-Rod: So tomorrow you go up against the U.S. some of your teammates, Goldie, Arenado. A little awkward. How’s that going to feel tomorrow?
”A-ロッド : 明日はアメリカとの対戦です。チームメイトであるゴールディーやアレナドがいて、ちょっと変な気持ちでしょうか。明日についてどのように思っていますか？”
Nootbaar: I’ll see if I got a text from them. I won’t text them first. But if they text me, I’ll respond to them. But I said it earlier, we were talking a lot of snack to each other and they held up their end of the bargain, so now it’s time for the showdown I’m excited.

Big Papi: How do you say in Japanese we kick butt?
”ビッグ・パピ : 日本語で、ケツ蹴ってやるってなんて言うんですか？”
Nootbaar: That is good.. Ippei, I mean, “Ippei come over here and help me out”, yeah, you know, I’m still learning. I’m still learning, Papi.
”ヌートバー : えっとそれは、、一平に、つまり、”一平、ここに来て助けてほしい”。僕はまだ学んでるところなんです。学んでるところなんですよ、パピ。”
Kevin: Lars, appreciate it, you man. Congrats and enjoy this. We’ll see you tomorrow night.

日本語訳についての補足など
1. 曲げるじゃない flex の意味
Flex という単語について、曲げる、などの意味で覚えていましたが、ここでは違いそう。なので、調べてみました。
slang : to show that you are very proud or happy about something you have done or something you own, usually in a way that annoys people
”スラング：自分がしたことや自分自身の何かを、とても誇りに思ったり嬉しく思っている、と示すこと。人をイライラさせる方法で、という意味で使われることが多い”
2. ハルク・ホーガンとリック・フレアー
ハルク・ホーガン/ Hulk Hogan とリック・フレアー/ Ric Flair は、アメリカのプロレスラーなのだそうです。
文章から察するに、二人ともすごい人なのでしょうね。などと言っていると、プロレス好きな人から、そんなことも知らんのかとあきれられそうですが。
きっと一般常識とも言えそうな有名な人たちの名前を、こういう機会を通して、コツコツ少しずつ覚えていこうと思います。
3. demeanor とは
demeanor について調べました。

4. come through について
ここでの come through について調べてみました。

”必要とされたり期待されたりすることをする”

5. 巨大なじゃない huge の意味
hugeについて調べました。
DICTIONARY.COM より、
Slang. very important, successful, popular, etc.
”スラング。とても重要な、成功した、人気の、など”
載っていた例文です。
The show is huge in Britain.
”そのショーはイギリスで成功している。”
6. アメリカでテキストするとは
テキストする、しないってヌートバー選手が話していました。「テキストする」というのは、携帯電話の番号を使って、メッセージを送ることです。日本では、ショートメール(SMS) という名前で呼んでいたような記憶があります。
7. hold up one's end of the bargain の訳
THE FREE DICTIONARY より、hold up (one's) end (of the bargain) の意味は、
To fulfill or attend to one's obligation(s) or promise(s) as agreed; to do one's agreed part in some arrangement.

さいごに
ヌートバー選手、興奮しているっていうのもあると思うんですが、話すのが早い早い。
こういう英語が、パッと無理なく、瞬間的に理解できるようになったら、英語がわりとできるようになってきたって思える気がします。ぼちぼちがんばります。
これくらいの英語を聞いた時に、考えなくても瞬時に理解できて、さっと返事したり、さらっと上手な日本語に訳せるようになって、「少しは英語ができるようになったかな」って思える日が来ますように。勉強方法なども、改めて考えていきたいと思います。
